Jun 20, 2008:
Six separate retail hives covering a total area of 16,000sq m is being built at the Canal Walk shopping centre in Cape Town at a cost of R250m.
The development is undertaken by Madison on behalf of Hyprop, which has a stake of 80%, and Ellerine Bros with 20%.
"These hives will be providing space to retailers who want to enjoy the benefits offered by the mall, but aren't able to trade inside the centre due to the size and nature of their businesses," says Wayne Abegglen, chief executive of Canal Walk.
He says the hives are being built next to the centre due to retailing and consumer demand. An additional 1,000 new parking spaces will also be developed.
The glass hives will have two storeys each and accentuate the centre's entrances.
Construction of the hives is expected to be completed by the mid-2009. – Elma Kloppers, Sake24
