A shopping centre in Cape Town's Lakeside is currently being revamped.
The Old Bakery, housed in a historic building that was previously a well-known bakery, opened in 2005 and has proven very successful.
The building is a National Heritage site, and was remodelled in 2004 from the original bakery that was in use since 1928. The bakery was closed in 2002 and the building was unused for two years until rezoning was completed. The new Old Bakery opened its doors to the public in October 2005.
"The revamp includes landscaping, cladding, signage and enclosing the courtyard and passageways," says Marc Edwards, general manager of Spire Property Management.
"The entire look and feel of the centre is being enhanced with the intention of increasing the centre's appeal to shoppers, and the courtyard will create a weatherproof sit-out area for the restaurants."
"The centre's branding will change from that of a convenience centre to a lifestyle centre, but in a way which will be in keeping with the building's heritage status," concludes Edwards.
