Koeberg, 30km north of Cape Town, is the only nuclear power station in Africa. Nuclear power stations are never free of controversy, and recent problems with one of Koeberg's reactors have led to blackouts and power cuts in the Cape, which are set to continue into the winter.
However, property developers are clamouring to build in the immediate vicinity, and their potential clients are apparently unconcerned with having a nuclear neighbour.
In the April issue of The Property Magazine, read why people are eager to live in suburbs where evacuation sirens share pavement space with the streetlights. In an article entitled Nuclear Family this issue also looks at how enforcement of emergency planning is affecting development in this area.
'The power station clearly has no negative effect on its nearest neighbours in Duynefontein or in fact even in Melkbos,' says Tony Vaughan, Managing Director of Media Nova, publishers of The Property Magazine. 'Buyers continue to be attracted to the beach, the surfing, and the safe, relaxed atmosphere. And excellent value-for-money property.'
