Sep 14, 2012:
The majority of people feel safe walking through the central district of Cape Town, it was reported on Friday.
About 82 percent of people and 83 percent of businesses were happy with safety levels, the Cape Times reported.
These were the findings of a survey by the Central City Improvement District (CCID), which commissioned independent agencies to interview businesses and 1800 people over a week.
CCID chairman Rob Kane said the central district achieved around 80 percent in satisfaction rates on key areas, which he described as "phenomenal".
He said the aim of the survey was to get an objective view of the city and use the findings as a benchmark for future performance.
The report found that over the past three years property investment in the central city brought in R4.6-billion and a Gross Domestic Product contribution of R1.5-billion was generated from events hosted.
The district's population boomed by 76 percent between 2001 and 2010.
