The Turbine Square development in Newtown, Johannesburg, claimed first prize at the 2008 South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA) awards for its innovative achievement in property development.

This redevelopment project involved a heritage structure being converted into a hypermodern office block for Ashanti Gold.

"The project's success and innovation lies in the fact that a historic building in an old area was converted into a commercial and viable new development," says Johan Truter, chairman of SAPOA.

Turbine Square was crowned as the general winner and the best office development.

The awards acknowledge achievements in eight categories, namely innovative solutions, social impact, upgrading, industrial, office and retail developments, international developments as well as other projects, which include residential hotel properties and leisure properties.

The retail award went to the Greenstone shopping centre in Modderfontein.

The industrial category's award was won by Mahogony Ridge in Pinetown.

Frank Berkeley, managing director of Nedbank Corporate Property Finance, which sponsored the awards, says this year's record number of entries is indicative of a sector that is going from strength to strength. – Sake24
