Prime Yzerfontein site set for new development

If you drive into Yzerfontein on the entry road that leads off the R27 West Coast road, eventually you arrive at a four-way stop outside the first shopping centre in the main part of this seaside town.
Directly ahead will be a landmark building in the town, the Paxton Centre. This prime 1 488m2 commercial site, named after its previous owner John Paxton, houses the Meeurots Restaurant, Post Office and veterinary service and was recently sold by Suzette Ferreira of Seeff Yzerfontein to Chris Pretorius, owner of the Langebaan Spar.

"The Paxton Centre is the first shopping precinct most people see when they drive into Yzerfontein," says Ferreira. "There is not much commercial property available in the town, so it is at a premium - and especially this building, which is so central. It was not actually up for sale but I had an interested buyer who wanted to make an offer. I approached the owner and, after negotiation, he agreed to sell for R4.375 million."

Pretorius is planning to build a Spar on part of the ground, with some smaller commercial space available for rental.

Ferreira says he will be making alterations to the buildings on the site, and the present tenants will still be accommodated in the new centre.

Pretorius says he has already submitted plans for the new centre to Malmesbury municipality, and he hopes to be able to start construction in January or February. Part of the old building is to be demolished to make way for construction of the new Spar.
