Cement sales in Southern Africa declined 20,2% year-on-year (y/y) in November to 1,158m tons, data from the Cement and Concrete Institute showed on Monday. The institute noted that November 2008 had two fewer sales days than the same month last year, and if that is taken into account, the decline would not have been as steep.
Regional sales are down 4,2% at 13,793m tons on a year-to-date basis. The moving annual total in Southern Africa was down 4,4% y/y in November to 14,7m tons.
Exports to other countries excluding Swaziland, Botswana, Lesotho and Namibia fell by 10,7% to 31,176 tons, bringing total exports sales since the beginning of the year to 119,368 tons - down 42% on the year-to-date basis.
