CT 'sports house' auctioned 18/2
2009-02-11 · Auctions
The famous Webb Ellis house – "the sports house" – will be auctioned on Wednesday 18 February.
Named after William Webb Ellis, who founded rugby as a sport in 1823 by picking up a soccer ball and running with it, the house is right across the road from the Newlands rugby stadium and a stone's throw from the Newlands cricket ground in Cape Town.
Mark Gadd from the auctioneers A&H Prestige says the house mainly consists of reception space, which makes it the ideal investment for businesspeople or corporate institutions looking to entertain guests before and after rugby and cricket matches at Newlands.
The house also contains a private living area which is currently being occupied by the current owner, but the buyer could convert it into overnight accommodation.
Moreover, highly collectable rugby and cricket photos dating back as far as the 1930s adorn the walls of the house. These are sold along with the house.
The furniture, which includes a bar for 12 people, is also sold with the house. Only the current owner's private furniture will not be included in the deal.
The value is "conservatively" estimated at R2,5m, says Gadd
