Busy Highveld Mall to expand
2010-03-10 · Gauteng
THE 40000m² Highveld Mall — the only regional shopping centre in Emalahleni (Witbank) — is undergoing a R100m expansion to meet both retailer and shopper demand. This 6000m² expansion on the western part of the existing mall will see a number of retailers making their debut in the area.
The mall’s busy Pick n Pay will also add 1000m² of floor space.
New tenants that will be opening in the Highveld Mall extension include Dis-Chem, @Home, Coricraft, Bargain Books, Nino’s, Baby Boom, American Swiss Jewellers, Standard Bank , Capitec Bank, Sterns and Sass Diva.
The centre’s co-owners — Resilient Property Income Fund , Changing Tides 91, Flanagan & Gerard Property Development & Investment and Mogwele Trading 278 — are planning a further expansion of about 12000m² which, once completed, will give the centre a gross lettable area of more than 60000m² .
Sandra van der Walt, GM of Highveld Mall, says the expansion became necessary as a result of customer needs and retailer requests.
“Our shopper numbers have increased substantially since Highveld Mall opened in April 2007 and we are consistently experiencing growth in trade,” says Van der Walt.
Patrick Flanagan, of Flanagan & Gerard, says the extension of Highveld Mall has attracted the interest of a number of specialised retailers.
“The quality of committed retailers who have a good existing footprint nationally demonstrates confidence in the expansion,” Flanagan says.
One of the new retailers that will move into in the expanded mall is Dis- Chem. This will be its first store in Emalahleni and the 55th store in the growing Dis-Chem network.
Johann Kriek of Resilient Property Income Fund says: “Highveld Mall’s excellent location and popularity positions it well for additional investment. The expansion plans will provide good opportunities for both the community and retailers, and we see this as a win-win solution to unlock greater value.”
