Long street heritage building to go on auction
2010-09-02 · Auctions
44 Long Street, home to the "On Broadway" theatre, will be taken to the auction floor at Auction Alliance's September commercial auction.
The iconic building was built in 1883 by Charles Freeman and has had numerous tenants including the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and the South African National Parks head office.
In 1972 the building was converted into the Space Theatre, the first defiantly non-racial venue in the Apartheid governed South Africa. The current tenant On Broadway, a well established theatre and dinner venue, took over the theatre in June 2010. They have taken over the ground floor restaurant and theatre and have brought a loyal audience, injecting a new energy into the property. The restaurant is open from 7am on weekdays and enjoys a constant stream of customers.
This multi-tenanted property offers a gross lettable area of approximately 1476m2 consisting of a mix of office space and restaurants as well as the theatre. The property generates a gross annual income of close to R2.2million.
The auction takes place at 12pm on September 21 at the Crystal Towers Hotel & Spa, Century City.
