Cape Town renames Fan Walk
2013-12-17 · Industrial Developments news
CAPE Town’s celebrated Fan Walk, which took thousands of fans to the stadium during the 2010 Soccer World Cup, was renamed the Walk of Remembrance by the city’s mayor, Patricia de Lille, yesterday.
Ms de Lille said during her speech to mark Reconciliation Day that the walk would keep alive the spirit of former president Nelson Mandela, who was buried on Sunday, and all those who contributed to create the new SA.
The walk would remind Cape Town residents that the journey toward reconciliation and the creation of an inclusive city was a long and difficult one. Ms de Lille said the city council would play its part by allocating public resources to address past imbalances, but the private sector and civil society also had a role to play. She led a “reconciliation walk” to commemorate the day.
Ms de Lille, cultural affairs and sports MEC Ivan Meyer and former soccer ace Quinton Fortune will have their hand prints set into a slab along the walk.
