Property doyen Les Weil died last week‚ listed property company Hyprop announced on Monday.
Weil‚ who had a distinguished career in property management and consulting‚ was a independent nonexecutive director at Hyprop.
“It is with great sadness and regret that Hyprop announces the passing of Les Weil on June 28 2013‚†Hyprop said in a statement on the Stock Exchange News Service.
Weil served as a nonexecutive director on the board of Hyprop for 10 years.
“Les’s diligence‚ knowledge‚ experience and unwavering commitment will be sorely missed. The board and management of Hyprop extend their deepest sympathy to Les’s family‚†Hyprop said. Weil was a qualified chartered accountant and also held an MBA.
He worked as the property consultant to the Airports Company South Africa.
Weil had more than 40 years’ experience in real estate‚ prior to which he spent several years in merchant banking and commerce.
He served as the president of the South African Chamber of Business. He was also chairman of JHI Properties until September 2010.
He participated in the formation of a number of listed property vehicles‚ the initial conceptualisation and assembly of Melrose Arch in Johannesburg and other developments.
Weil was a member of the King Committee on Corporate Governance and a fellow of the Institute of Directors. A registered valuer‚ he was also an appraiser appointed by SA’s Minister of Justice and a Commissioner of Oaths.
He was given an award by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors‚ in London in 2007 for his contribution to SA’s property industry.
