It was thumbs up yesterday morning as the full IRT bus route from Table View kicked off.
Although many people arrived on the buses in the morning, they were not filled to capacity.
Commuter Brandon van der Watt said he was pleased with yesterday morning's IRT service.
"I timed the trip and it took exactly 40 minutes from Bayside station. On other buses it usually takes me two hours. There are four major bottlenecks and we passed by them all easily this morning.
"All the staff on the bus were very friendly. They seemed nervous but they were really awesome."
Other commuters had generally positive comments about the trip.
"It was fantastically comfortable. However, there were too many stops for disembarking and embarking. It took me 40 to 45 minutes to arrive," said one.
The buses stop at every station along the red trunk lanes to the Civic Centre. This means commuters living in Big Bay, Table View, Parklands and Blouberg have services to the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town station and the Loop and Long street areas every 10 minutes during peak hours and every 20 minutes outside of these hours.
Ebrahim Hendricks, station manager at the Civic Centre station, said: "This morning was busy. People were still trying to find their way, but between 6am and 8.45am things were busy."
Ronald Kingma, manager of IRT operations, said the bus he was on had 40 people on it but that it was early days.
City spokesperson Kylie Hatton said she had statistics of how many people used the buses on their first day, but figures would be available later.
"Many buses were full during peak time. Overall we had positive feedback. One issue was affordability, but if you factor in R10 for the route and feeder route ticket, city parking and petrol, R10 is affordable. The travel time has also been much reduced due to the dedicated busway. The stations are safe and well run."
